Marchel Ivery is not particularly well-known outside of his hometown of Dallas, but he is an excellent tenor saxophonist who is deserving of attention. Ivery's style is most influenced by Sonny Rollins, although on his third release for Leaning House, 3, there are a couple originals ("Snake Charmer" and "Another Trane Thing") that are tributes to John Coltrane. During the first four songs, all of which are standards, Ivery is joined by organist Joey DeFrancesco and drummer G.T. Hogan, romping on "East of the Sun" and adding his warm tone to "Portrait of Jenny." The second half of the program has Ivery in a sparser setting with bassist Lyles West and drummer Andrew Griffith, showing that he can improvise quite well without needing a chordal instrument. Ivery excels in both formats, thinks fast, and never seems to run out of creative ideas. Highly recommended.
