Tenors Frank Foster and Frank Wess have had overlapping careers during the past 40 years. They are both featured (with Wess doubling on flute) throughout 12 of the 15 selections on this two-LP set in a septet with trombonists Henry Coker and Benny Powell, guitarist Kenny Burrell, bassist Eddie Jones and drummer Kenny Clarke. Not too surprisingly the music (despite the very different instrumentation) is in the vein of Count Basie. The other three selections (two previously unissued) are from a hard bop session that Foster had with a sextet that also features trumpeter Donald Byrd and trombonist Coker. The music on this out-of-print two-fer is not essential but straightahead fans who run across it will find it enjoyable.
