The 111 tracks on this 2009 release bring together the best of Frédéric Chopin's music. The lush, lyrical music of the 19th century, Polish composer is held dear by many and is a cornerstone of the Romantic musical canon. Unlike other compilations that give you just a movement or an excerpt of a movement, what's found here are complete opuses of waltzes, nocturnes, and mazurkas; the complete piano concertos; the complete Piano Sonatas No. 2 and No. 3; single works for piano including the "Heroic" Polonaise, Op. 53, and the Fantasie-Impromptu, Op. 66; and several of the Preludes, Op. 28. The performers include well-respected Chopin interpreters Abbey Simon, Peter Schmalfuss, and Ivan Moravec; plus the Polish pianist Bianca Sitzius with the Poland Philharmonic Chamber Orchestra conducted by its founder Wojciech Rajski. Those who know only Chopin's "Funeral March" (from the Piano Sonata No. 2) or the "Minute" Waltz will discover just how much more there is to enjoy by this legendary pianist/composer.
