Great name for a band and a great title for a debut. Philadelphia-based Late Night Television has been active since 1995, producing this debut in 1999. It seems as though the CD is designed as a release of personal demons afflicting young Matt Kelley, he of singing and songwriting responsibilities. With clever if not snide lyrics and quick buzzing guitars, 11 Love Songs has just enough angst to be angry but tempered with wit and wistfulness so not to appear too bitter. Kelley sings like Paul Westerberg circa 1993, especially on tracks like "I'll Never Do Anything (As Cool as You)" -- another perfect title. The music is indie rock in the well-worn vein of the Replacements or the Doughboys, close but not quite sugary enough for Matthew Sweet territory. Scruffy and lovable.
