The play list for Virgin's five-disc 101 90's Hits compilation speaks volumes about the chasm between the era's industry-driven Top 40 radio and the massive alternative rock/Brit-popnu-metal scene that mirrored it. In this case it's the former that's represented, which means that bubbly English and American dance pop from the Spice Girls (both together and solo), Britney Spears, Robbie Williams and Backstreet Boys rules the roost. That's not to say that the underground was completely ignored, as cracks in the pavement from Blur ("Girls and Boys"), Supergrass ("Alright"), Lightning Seeds ("Life of Riley") and the Waterboys ("Whole of the Moon") provide a little light at the end of the runway, but it's hard to imagine that this scatterbrained anthology was compiled by an actual person.
