Carl Weingarten has a laid-back style a little reminiscent of Bill Frisell, taking his time even when his sound is at its most rockish. With bassist Michael Manring and drummer Brian Knave in his trio, Weingarten creates music that often has the sound of rock while its slow movement and development are closer to new age. Six of the 11 selections have one of three cellists in the ensembles, and keyboardist John Baker is on three songs. However, the emphasis is on Weingarten's sound and the mood set by the pieces' themes rather than any real forward motion or excitement, so some may find the results a bit dull.
