AllMusic Review by

This set is a tribute to the classic Lionel Hampton recordings of 1937-41. Bob Wilber's set has been reissued on CD by Phontastic. Vibraphonist Lars Erstrand (whose main influence was obviously Hampton) gets second billing and the other sidemen are also quite notable: altoist Norris Turney, trumpeter Jimmy Maxwell, the tenors of Al Klink and Frank Wess, pianist Hank Jones, guitarist Bucky Pizzarelli, bassist Michael Moore and drummer Connie Kay. Highlights include "I'm in the Mood for Swing," "Dinah," "Ring Dem Bells" and "The Sheik of Araby." Wilber triples on clarinet, alto and soprano and the music does not merely imitate the past but is creative within the boundaries of swing.
