Trumpeter Lou Colombo, who dedicated this CD to the lyrical cornetist Bobby Hackett, has a beautiful tone, some of Hackett's lyricism and a way of shaping solos that is similar to Jack Sheldon. Pianist Dave McKenna (who duets with Colombo on "The Gypsy"), guitarist Gray Sargent, bassist Phil Flanigan and drummer Keith Copeland are major assets on the creative swing date. Dick Johnson's "I Remember Bobby" (which quotes several of Hackett's recordings including his famous "String of Pearls" solo) and a cooking "Avalon" are among the highpoints. Ballads alternate with medium-tempo performances, all of them interpreted tastefully and in swinging fashion by Lou Colombo who deserves to be much better-known.
