Oasis

Wonderwall

Song Review by

Written by Noel Gallagher for his girlfriend (now ex-wife) Meg Matthews, "Wonderwall" did the one thing that British rock bands had been unable to do in years: break America. This simple love song rocketed Oasis to the levels of rock royalty, and Noel Gallagher earned worldwide respect for his writing ability. From the simple acoustic intro, through the strategically placed drum entrance (a split second after the word "backbeat"), to the final refrain, "Wonderwall" is both one of the best Oasis songs and one of the best love songs ever written. Liam Gallagher, however, thought the song corny at first. At least that's what he told his brother. But when it came time to decide who would sing it, Liam jumped at it. A wise move, too, because with the success of the song worldwide, Liam became to many the frontman of the decade. Even America caught on to the simple tune. It became a radio staple, and the video grabbed high rotation on MTV. Oasis has had a lot of shining moments, but "Wonderwall" was their brightest.
