Word of mouth is a powerful thing, especially in the highly competitive field of songwriting. Hair stylist Sami McKinney heard through background singer Lori Perri of Perri that Anita Baker was looking for songs for her new album. McKinney and his writing partner, Michael O'Hara, had submitted a song, "Feel So Good," to Baker before. The singer took a pass on the tune, which ended being recorded by Perri for the Do the Right Thing soundtrack. One day while Baker and Lori Perri were riding in a car together, the singer heard a demo of "Just Because." The ballad's simple sentiment appealed to her, and she told Perri that she wanted it for her Givin' You the Best That I Got album, which went on to sell over three million copies. Written by O'Hara, McKinney, and Alex Brown, and produced by Michael J. Powell, "Just Because" hit number one R&B and went to number 14 pop in spring 1989.
