Ruby Turner

It's Gonna Be Alright

Song Review by

Jamaica-born singer Ruby Turner's credits include singing background vocals for Culture Club, UB40, and Byran Ferry. Signed to Jive Records, she wanted to have an American hit. For her second LP, the London-based Turner was teamed with songwriter/producer Loris Holland, who was signed to Zomba Music, Jive's music publishing firm. When she began recording tracks for her third album, Holland returned and he, Turner, and Joylon Skinner began writing songs together. Jive president Clive Calder stressed the need for a hit single. The trio decided to write something in the mode of Soul II Soul. While it curiously did not make the pop charts, it was included on her Paradise LP and "It's Gonna Be Alright" went to number one R&B in late 1989.
