Earth, Wind & Fire's first Top Five hits, "Mighty, Mighty" is a virtual blueprint for what was to come from this remarkable band. Based in a knee-deep Sly & the Family Stone groove, the song's overlaid percussion, bass line, and superlative horn arrangement propel the cut with both power and dancefloor precision. But the star here is the band's awesome counterpoint vocal trade-off, especially those between Phillip Bailey and bandleader Maurice White. Lyrically, the song is a unifying, anthemic statement, rendering it's urban politics with a shining glory. If this had been the band's only hit record, they still would be a force to be reckoned with. Available on Sony/Legacy's The Essential Earth, Wind & Fire.
