Rufus Wainwright

In My Arms

Composed by Rufus Wainwright

Song Review by

One of the few songs on Rufus Wainwright's debut album that is driven by his guitar, this slightly Spanish-influenced ballad is also one of the album's best. A truly forlorn ballad, this song is laden with an almost cinematic regret. The first half of the song has a sparse feel, but soon slips effortlessly into a jazzy, cabaret feel, highlighted by some tasteful orchestration and Martha Wainwright's suburb background vocals. Sounding as if it could have been recorded in France in the 1920s, it's truly evocative as a mood piece, and one of the record's most arresting selections.
