Song Review by

One of the greatest, lost singles from the 1966/1967 era, "Happenings Ten Years Time Ago" is not only a great record, but also a very historic one as well. One of the precious three sides recorded when both Jeff Beck and Jimmy Page shared lead guitar duties, it brought these two giants together with sterling results. Led by a dark, Middle Eastern/psychedelic guitar riff, the song is quickly transformed into a frenetic, almost psychopathic rhythm, giving the whole affair a weird and powerful atmosphere. The idea of going back and forwards into time is paramount here, and was certainly one with the overall psychedelic ambience of the time. The record probably should have made the Top Ten worldwide, but only scraped the Top 40 on both sides of the Atlantic, possibly due to the fact that the mastering of the record sounded a bit rushed and a little muddy. There was also unparalleled competition at the time as well on the singles charts, and this very progressive record was somewhat lost in the shuffle. It is now available on the excellent Rhino collection Ultimate Yardbirds.
