"Fashion," one of the finest cuts on 1980's Scary Monsters album, was originally written as a funk/reggae hybrid built around a rhythm David Bowie had already employed on 1976's "Golden Years." Originally titled "Jamaica," "Fashion" took on its familiar form following the arrival in the studio of Robert Fripp -- his so-characteristic guitar twists around the rhythm like a snake, before devouring the song's overt dancey-ness whole. As culture clashes go, "Fashion" takes a lot of beating.
Released as the follow-up to the "Ashes to Ashes" single, "Fashion" readily gave Bowie a Top Five hit in Britain and, live, has developed into one of his most reliably malleable numbers.
