Neil Young

Are You Ready For the Country?

Composed by Neil Young

Song Review by

The first of only three rockers that appear on Harvest, "Are You Ready for the Country" underlines Neil Young's laid-back country and western leanings that were always there, and hit a certain apex in the early '70s. Some funky piano (by Young himself) and lazy slide guitar work surround the loose arrangement and melody perfectly, framing the lyrics with a sense of whimsy. At the dawn of the 1970s, the disenfranchised, post-Woodstock generation was indeed ready for the sentiment, so it's not too suprising that the album was as successful and impacting as it was -- and still is.
