Marabi

Emerging in South Africa during the 1920s, marabi was a conflation of musical styles. The music combined elements of Dixieland jazz with local musical conventions from the Zulu, Xhosa, and the Sotho. The music was performed primarily in illegal drinking establishments and was therefore snubbed by the more well-to-do blacks, as they did not want to be associated with illegal activities that might detract from their economic base.
