George Harrison

Here Comes the Sun

    Description by James Leonard

On a warm spring afternoon in 1969, George Harrison wrote "Here Comes the Sun" in Eric Clapton's garden on one of Clapton's acoustic guitars. The lyrics were sketched out on a piece of notepaper with the memo that the bridge was to be based on the bridge of "Badge," a song Harrison and Clapton had written together earlier that spring. When the Beatles recorded "Here Comes the Sun" in early July 1969, Harrison sang lead and played acoustic guitar, harmonium, and synthesizer and Paul McCartney played bass and sang backing vocals, Ringo Starr played drums, and all three added handclaps. John Lennon was not at the sessions for "Here Comes the Sun" and plays no part in the song's recording. The song starts with a guitar playing the opening melody in E major twice, first alone and then doubled by the synthesizer. After a brief pause, Harrison's voice enters with the harmonium for the chorus, a repetition of the title over a series of perfect cadences through secondary dominants with a harmonic tag at the end. The verse is a heartwarming melody over simple cadences returning to the chorus. The bridge is indeed lifted from "Badge," with its characteristic chord changes rolling beneath high, keening voices. After the return of the verse and the chorus, Harrison alone on guitar takes the song to its final cadence.
