George Gershwin

Sleepless Night, prelude for piano (Melody No. 17, reconstructed by Alicia Zizzo)

    Description by Norbert Carnovale

This is basically a simple tune for piano solo employing major and minor thirds both ascending and descending in lyrical melodies. The piece was originally part of the Gershwin Melody Collection, now at the Library of Congress. According to Edward Jablonski, "the designation and title are in Ira's hand. At the top of the page Kay Swift, Gershwin's favorite woman friend, has written 'Prelude'. [It is believed that] this is one of the six preludes Gershwin played at recitals in concert with contralto Marguerite d'Alvarez late in 1926."
