George Frederick Handel

Alpestre Monte, cantata, HWV 81

    Description by Joseph Stevenson

This is one of the finest solo secular cantatas from Handel's Italian period, rcently restored from partial copies found in various libraries. It is one of the shorter, yet finer, of the Handel cantatas. It is the lament of a young man whose heart has been snared by a "gentle nymph" named Nice; he is heading off to "Alpine heights and solitary woods" where he plans to die. The melancholy and depression of this text prompted Handel to use very daring restless modulations to remote keys. Exceptionally touching music.
