Based around Shayna Steele's big voice and a repeated piano figure, this nearly eight-minute track from her new album,
Rise, builds to a peak and tapers off with a jazzy, seemingly-improvised outro. Steele brings years of Broadway experience, having appeared in
Rent,
Jesus Christ Superstar and
Hairspray, as well as teaming up with
Moby for an update of his track "Extreme Ways."
Rise, which is out next week, features contributions from jazz saxophone star
Andy Snitzer, acclaimed multi-instrumentalist
Marcus Miller (best known for his time with
Miles Davis), bassist
Christian McBride and pedal steel superstar
Robert Randolph.
Rise can be ordered
via iTunes, or picked up in person at the record release show at the Rockwood Music Hall in New York City on Thursday.
