Eighty-eight piano keys can be used to produce such varied sounds and music, and this month's releases show that wide range. Musicologist Robert Levin was given the opportunity to record all the Mozart sonatas on a fortepiano owned by the composer himself. As the piano became more affordable, literature for it flourished in the 19th century and into the early 20th century. Kim Bernard programmed a recital of Chopin, Debussy, and Ravel covering that exact period. The exploration of the possibilities of the piano continues today with Richard Danielpour's Études and other pieces recorded by Stefano Greco (pictured above), and with Philip Golub testing a new compositional concept on his album Filters.
