Rarely heard works by famous composers were among the recordings that our reviewers found this month, often on the same album as some of their more well-known music. Rachmaninov's Caprice Bohémian, an early orchestral work, was paired by Paavo Järvi and L'Orchestre de Paris with the Symphony No. 3. A re-mastered recording of The Rite of Spring by Michael Tilson Thomas and the Boston Symphony also features a brief cantata by Stravinsky, The King of the Stars.
In 1930, Sir Arthur Bliss wrote a narrative, choral symphony entitled Morning Heroes, which remarks on the consequences of war, offered here by conductor Andrew Davis and the BBC Symphony. Pianist Raluca Stirbat performs the music of George Enescu, a composer better known for his orchestral and violin music. Also in this month's releases are Rufus Wainwright's opera, Prima Donna, and the first of the season's holiday selections.
