In a typical month, our reviewers often cover large works such as symphonies, concertos, oratorios, and operas. This past month featured a lot of chamber music – including chamber versions of some of Mozart's piano concertos, by Haiou Zhang and by Didier Castell-Jacomin – for those who want a more intimate listening session. The Attacca Quartet devotes a full album to new music by Pulitzer Prize-winning composer Caroline Shaw, while the Maxwell Quartet has released its reading of the Haydn Op. 71 quartets and Quatuor Diotima gives us a complete cycle of Bartók's quartets. Naxos offers a disc of the chamber music of Herbert Howells, which is much less known than his choral music. Respected veteran musicians Evgeny Kissin and the Emerson String Quartet joined for a recital of Mozart, Fauré, and Dvorák, captured by Deutsche Grammophon last year.
