New Classical Reviews, April 2017

Along with new recordings of Strauss tone poems, Chopin piano concertos, symphonies by Tchaikovsky and Elgar, and new choral music, April also delivered several releases that will be of interest to Baroque music fans. Relatively new to audiences, pianist Beatrice Rana has recorded Bach's Goldberg Variations, while veteran Murray Perahia has tackled the French Suites. Lutenist William Carter performs Bach, but not the expected lute music; instead, he has transcribed solo violin and cello works. Beyond Bach, Elizabeth Kenny's Theatre of the Ayre reconstructs a courtly masque, and Musica Secreta and Celestial Sirens sample music that may have been written by Leonora d'Este, the daughter of Lucretia Borgia.
