"Dickie's Bringin Me Down," from Low Cut Connie's new album, Hi Honey, takes "If It Wasn't for Dicky," an old tune from the Lead Belly catalog—later revamped by Pete Seeger and the Weavers as "Kisses Sweeter Than Wine"—and gives it a gritty rock swagger, complete with thumping drums, piano accents and a big guitar solo from former Ween lead guitarist Dean Ween (Mickey Melchiondo).
Hi Honey is out next Tuesday, and editor Stephen Thomas Erlewine has already given it four stars, singling out this track for its "'Run Through the Jungle' makeover" of the Lead Belly tune. Check it out below.
