Today The Echo Nest is examining a recent BBC World Service report which included such findings as "music has been growing increasingly minor, which is the mode associated with sad emotions." Digging deeper -- the BBC only looked at 1,000 songs total -- the folks at the Echo Nest studied 17 million songs going back to 1960 to see if they arrived at the same conclusions.
