Set aside the political turmoil that's defined 2017 throughout the world: the year in music also had its own fair share of tumult. Some of that can be chalked up to stars who knew how to create controversy -- sometimes, it seemed as if Father John Misty knew how to play the press as well as he could play guitar -- but it's also true that 2017 produced a lot of good music in every single category, including hybrid styles which are difficult to name.
Not all of 2017's good music could be called experimental, but even traditionalists like Margo Price and Jason Isbell took risks within their own chosen form, which made their records feel as vital as the risky, adventurous albums by St. Vincent and Kendrick Lamar. All of these records earned their fair share of mainstream press but some of the best albums of 2017 existed on the margins, such as an ambitious effort from composer Max Richter or the second albums from the experimental Georgian outfit Algiers and avant-pop singer/songwriter EMA. Then, there were the strong records from such working musicians as Alvvays, the Clientele, and Mac DeMarco, proof that even in this crowded digital landscape, good work will stand out from the crowd. These are just a few of the albums that the editors loved in 2017, and chances are we'll still be discovering little-heard treasures from this year in the decades to come.
