AllMusic Loves 1996

AllMusic Loves 1996

Aug. 20, 2012

Looking back, 1996 appears to be a transitional year. Britpop had reached its peak -- all year long all around the world, Oasis ruled the charts with their '95 (What's the Story) Morning Glory -- but it was beginning to mature, as evidenced by the sweeping MOR punk of Manic Street Preachers' Everything Must Go, while American alt-rock was fracturing into what we now know as indie rock and big corporate post-grunge. But what may have been the true defining movement of '96 was the rise of electronica and, with it, electronic-informed post-rock. DJ Shadow released his dense sampladelic masterpiece Endtroducing…, and there was an avalanche of trip-hop, the sound inching into the mainstream via such hybrids as Beth Orton's Trailer Park, which itself was trumped by Everything But the Girl's full-on electronic Walking Wounded. And then there was the middle ground, the rockers who adopted electronic techniques: Beck's carnivalesque Odelay and Noel Gallagher singing psychedelia with the Chemical Brothers. Indie rock continued to get arty -- post-rock began to rise, Stereolab turned nearly ubiquitous with Emperor Tomato Ketchup -- and so did hip-hop, thanks to the various Wu-Tang breakout projects and Dr. Octagon, but the mainstream kicked up some of the greatest novelties of the '90s with Quad City DJs' "C'mon and Ride the Train," OMC's "How Bizarre," and Los del Rio's "Macerena," but nothing could touch the Spice Girls, who took Cool Brittania into the American mainstream in a way Blur could have only dreamed about. All in all, there were plenty of reasons to love 1996.

For some reason, 1996 always pales in my mind in comparison to 1995 -- probably because '95 gave us the holy Britpop trinity of Different Class, (What's the Story) Morning Glory, and The Great Escape, along with Maxinquaye, Wowee Zowee, and many others that are among my favorite albums. But 1996 was no slouch, either, and it's fair to say only a hair separates the first eight albums on my list. It was very difficult to whittle down both my albums and singles lists to a mere 20 entries and while the accompanying Spotify playlist gathers a bunch of the overlap, I've never felt so limited by its licensing restrictions before -- probably because both Ween's 12 Golden Country Greats and Sheryl Crow's self-titled album aren't available on the service (neither is "Natural One" nor "Return of the Mack," for those keeping score at home).

I was gonna reflect on what 1996 meant to me, being in high school in the middle of a cultural wasteland and soaking up any/all of the music I could get my hands on, but with the publication of this AllMusic Loves happening in summer 2012 I shift focus to the present. My heart is heavy due to the passings of Bill Doss, Celso Chavez and Jason Noble, each of whom played important roles not just on some of my '96 album picks (with Olivia Tremor Control, Possum Dixon, and Rachel's, respectively) but also as entry points to music discovery that continue to resonate. Thank you for the music, guys.
