"1989/The number, another summer." So said Chuck D in Public Enemy's epoch-defining single "Fight the Power," but 1989 was not just another summer and it was not just another year. The last year of the '80s was one of the best of the decade, seeing the culmination of many of the past decade's trends and the beginning of sounds that would later define the '90s. One major place where the two decades intersected was at the Golden Age of Sampling, vividly heard on De La Soul's 3 Feet High and Rising and Beastie Boys' Paul's Boutique. In '89, these albums seemed to usher in an era of boundless re-contextualizing but lawsuits soon reined in sampling, leaving these two albums as the high-water mark of sample-heavy hip-hop. Elsewhere, dance met rock in invigorating ways, particularly in Manchester where the Stone Roses' debut straddled the '60s and '80s with ease. As some of the '80s college rock icons cleaned up in an attempt to crossover -- the Replacements sounded slicker than ever, Bob Mould turned down the amps, the Cure scored a genuine hit single with "Lovesong," as did Love and Rockets with "So Alive" -- Nirvana and Nine Inch Nails delivered their debuts and Pixies released their monumental Doolittle. As '60s veterans Neil Young and Bob Dylan delivered evocative, muscular new work, XTC, Lenny Kravitz, and Tears for Fears delivered psychedelic pastiche, while Tom Petty cannily collaborated with Jeff Lynne on his first solo album, which hearkened back to the '60s while sounding like the '80s. But if you really want to know what 1989 sounded like, turn to the Top 40 charts, ruled by the new jack swing of Bobby Brown, the surging ambition of Madonna's Like a Prayer, and a ton of pop-rap crossovers, led by Young MC's "Bust a Move" and Biz Markie's "Just a Friend." Then again, any one of these paths -- and many more -- give you plenty of reasons to Love 1989.
