Well, it's 1969 OK, and contrary to what Iggy & the Stooges sang, it wasn't quite just another year with nothing to do. Certainly the musicians of 1969 found plenty to do, seizing the revolutionary spirit of the times by creating adventurous music that still resonates today. Miles Davis opened up jazz with
In a Silent Way, Buck Owens decked out his Bakersfield twang with fuzz guitars, the Who released the groundbreaking rock opera
Tommy, Sly & the Family Stone brought funk to pop, and Led Zeppelin virtually created heavy metal with a pair of LPs, while the Flying Burrito Brothers pioneered country-rock with
The Gilded Palace of Sin. Even Elvis took chances again on his tremendous
From Elvis in Memphis; it was just that kind of year. But while some looked forward to the future, others got back to basics, whether it was Bob Dylan going country, the Band creating a mythic America, or the Stooges and MC5 getting raw and primitive, making music that wound up every bit as timeless as the revolutionary sounds that characterized this final year of the '60s.
Stephen Thomas Erlewine
Alright, including three Creedence Clearwater Revival albums on one list may be a bit much but CCR were at such a peak it's hard to pick which one is the best. Then again, looking over what was released in 1969 it seems like everybody was at a peak of sorts, whether it was the Beatles going out in fine form with
Abbey Road or Led Zeppelin crashing in with two galvanizing LPs. These albums are at the foundation of classic rock so they're hard to ignore but what deserves more attention are the singles of '69. This was one of the hardest years to whittle down to a manageable list -- there were simply too many great seven-inches of soul, bubblegum, country, and rock. As always, I picked what sounded best to my ears right now -- it's not definitive, merely a snapshot of an excellent year.

There is so much good music to pick from in 1969, I decided to include a mix of albums that I really like whether they are considered classics or not. To these ends, I went with two Beatles albums because I love them. Conversely, I could have gone with two Zeppelin albums and ended up picking the one I really listen to the most. The jazz world was in transition in '69 and produced a ton of crazy avant-garde and free albums. I considered Pharoah Sanders' epic
Karma, but chose to go with Miles' forward-looking
In a Silent Way. On the cult-classic front, while Mighty Baby's album is in no way more important than
Led Zeppelin I, I really dig it and return to it time and again. Similarly, Nick Garrie's
Nightmare of J.B. Stanislas is a brilliant piece of singer/songwriter psych-pop and totally worth seeking out.

1969 was a very different time. Probably half the artists on my list couldn't get a record deal to save their lives today. Tons of great music, and only room on this list for 20 albums. It was a great year for Tropicália (three hands-down classics of the style), a great year for Frank Zappa (
Uncle Meat AND
Hot Rats!?!), and a great year for just plain weird (the Shaggs, Lucia Pamela, Holy Modal Rounders, Captain Beefheart). Plus, great albums from the Beatles, Miles, Neil Young (his best?), and King Crimson. And no laughing about Chicago: Terry Kath kills on that album!
