This Ghanian group was formed in Accra by drummers Nii Ashitey and Saka Acquaye in 1973 and became the leading band in the country’s acoustic highlife revival of the early to mid-70s. Forsaking electric guitars and drum kits, bands like Wulomei (whose name translates as ‘Fetish Priest’ in Ga) and Dzadzeloi featured a choir of traditional percussion instruments, acoustic guitars and melodically rich call-and-response vocals. They enjoyed a number of successful domestic hits spread over a series of early 70s albums. The band folded in 1976 shortly after an ambitious USA tour, but reformed occasionally thereafter.
