Folk-rocker Tim Moyer began playing drums at age seven, and within a few years was sitting in with his father's jazz band; he moved on to guitar at 16, soon beginning to write his own songs. Performing throughout his native Southern California both as a solo acoustic act and with a backing band comprised of guitarist Matthew Van Doran, bassist Rocco Presutti and drummer Jorgen Ingmar, Moyer amassed a loyal following prior to releasing his debut LP Out of the Blue in 1999.
