b. Germany. A gifted trombonist, Bergmann has gained a reputation for intense, moody performances of material not usually associated with the jazz repertoire. Among musicians with whom Bergmann has worked live and on record are trumpeters Axel Dörner and Lutz Wolf, and saxophonists Felix Wahnschaffe and Daniel Erdmann. For his band Brass Attack Bergmann draws extensively from the work of Bertolt Brecht and Kurt Weill. On their 1997 recording Brecht Songs, a dramatic exploration of the composer’s music, Bergmann is joined by all the foregoing musicians as well as trombonist Ralf Zickerick, tuba player Stefan Gocht, drummer Joshua Tinwa and vocalists Tanja Ries, Celina Muza and Diseur Diserable Maza. This album, like so much of Bergmann’s work reveals manifold influences that range through twentieth-century German culture to American classic popular song and jazz, in particular big band music updated with a contemporary slant. Another band Bergmann has led is Boom Box.
