b. 23 April 1959, Dortmund, Germany. A gifted drummer, at home in small group and big band settings, Berg has established a secure reputation in several areas of the jazz music business. When working with his own big band, Berg makes able use of vigorous young German musicians and the overall effect is one of the most exciting modern big bands of the 90s. For recording sessions he also happily introduces into the band’s ranks musicians from elsewhere, such as Gerard Presencer, Mark Nightingale, Slide Hampton and Martin Shaw. He has also used the big band as a setting for recordings with singer Barbara Morrison (1993’s Blues For Ella). This album was released on Berg’s own label, Mons Records, on which he has recorded not only his own performances but also those of artists such as Don Braden and Allan Harris.
