The Recital formed in September 1999 when vocalist Chris Ostafinski, guitarist Ryan Brescoe, bassist Adam Kempa and drummer Rob Byrd began collaborating in Livonia, Michigan. Favoring a quirky and spirited approach to indie rock, the band immediately began performing throughout the Detroit area, often with their friends in Red Shirt Brigade and This Is Adelaide. The Chord Chord Chord Chord Chord Chord Other Chord EP was released in summer 2001, as the band continued to reinvent their sound. Things That Could Very Well Happen and Ruin Your Life followed in the summer of 2002, again showcasing the band's progression. The quartet made an appearance on Suburban Sprawl Records' Home Recordings Vol.1 collection in late 2002, while working on a proper full-length release in 2003.
