Having met in Paterson, NJ, while taking a number of jazz courses in college, Dan Shuman (bass) and Lars Aakesson (guitar) had the commonality of wanting to play more of a stripped-down progression of three-chord punk. After moving to New York City in 1999 and hooking up with Howard Karp on drums, the Gelatin Boys took shape with additional inspirations such as Pavement, the Velvet Underground, and the Stooges. By the beginning of 2001, the trio recorded and self-released their debut full-length entitled Beware of the Gelatin Boys.
