A flamboyant performer on the Minneapolis scene, Brust is best known for his science fiction and fantasy writing. Collaborations with writer Emma Bull, who leads the band Cats Laughing, led to musical involvement on Brust's part as well, with widespread effect as Brust proceeded to work with and write for Cats Laughing, the Flash Girls and Boiled In Lead, with band members moving from one band to another. A solo album, A Rose for Iconoclastes, followed in 1993, as did Songs From the Gypsy, a Boiled In Lead album on which the band performed songs written by Brust in tandem with his novel The Gypsy, which was provided as part of an additional non-audio section on the disc. Brust continues to be noted as a writer, with increasing readership, but has been relatively quiet on the musical front since 1995.
