Tim Beckman (guitar, vocals), Chanin Floyd (bass, vocals) and Garrett Shavlik (drums, vocals) formed Spell in Denver, Colorado, USA, in 1994. Previously Beckman had been a member of a band called Rope, while Shavlik had drummed with Sub Pop Records recording artists Fluid. When he left that band in 1993 he began writing songs alongside Beckman, who invited his wife Floyd (ex-57 Lesbian) to become their bass player. While perfecting their abrasive rock sound the group spent the next year negotiating for a contract with major record labels, eventually signing to Island Records in April 1994. They made their debut in August with ‘TK Title’, a 7-inch single, which preceded their debut album in October. Announcing its contents as ‘sexually charged noise pop energy’, it won them comparisons with the Afghan Whigs and Dinosaur Jr.
