Oklahoma natives Smarty Pants have not been afraid to show their influences on their sleeve, and the broad range of musicians they mimic sets their sound apart brilliantly. Often invoking the delicate psychedelia of fellow Oklahomans the Flaming Lips while alternately carrying on the clever nerd-emo of Weezer, this strange mix is only thrown off more by the nasal delivery of singer/guitarist Ryan Bellgardt. Joined by fellow guitarist Chris Palmer, keyboardist Jeff Bellgardt, bassist Kyle Granger, and drummer Kyle Martin, Ryan's home studio became the home base for the band as they started to spread their name throughout the music underground. Their catchy sound easily caught on, sending the group into the studio to put together their wonderfully titled EP Phone Home in 2001. Supporting acts as varied as Incubus and Wesley Willis, the band even gained the attention of their heroes in Weezer, who gave their quirky album and playful stage show their official blessing. Striving to outdo themselves, the band put together E=MC Hammer in the spring of 2002 and released it themselves that fall.
