Inspired by the success of hip-hop and rap, Shadz O'Blak, along with other young Kenyan bands, began to look at their own culture in the mid-'90s. Led by singers Ffyonna and Laura, Shadz O'Blak attracted international attention as one of the bands appearing on the groundbreaking Todd Josiah-produced compilation album, Kenyan: the First Chapter in 1997. Despite their influence on Kenya's music, Shadz O'Blak disbanded shortly after the album's release with Ffyonna traveling to the United States to study.
