Comprised of members Mark Levine (piano), Michael Spiro (percussion), David Belove (bass), Ron Stallings (soprano, alto, tenor sax, flute, vocals), Jeff Cressman (trombone), and Paul van Wageningen (drums), the seeds of the Latin jazz outfit Que Calor were planted in February of 1997, when Stallings and Levine traveled to Cuba to study with regional master musicians. With the lineup in place by 1999, the multi-member ensemble issued their debut recording, Keeper of the Flame, in July of the same year (on the Spirit Nectar label).
