Having gotten together in 1991, the formation of Brian Kesselring (vocals/ guitar), John Knutson (guitar) and Paul Curatolo (bass) resulted in the genre-bending sound of Puzzlefish. Along with an array of several different drummers before settling with Darrell Grey, the quartets combination of jazz, funk, bluegrass, alternative and live improvisation was brought on to their hometown of San Francisco. By 1995, the band recorded and released their first album 4:20 through their own appropriately titled label 4:20 Records. But after their follow-up album Bouncenplod came out two years later, the band abruptly called it quits with John Knutson and Brian Kesselring moving onto form Food.
