Hip-hop multi-instrumentalist Phil Crumar was born and raised in Washington, D.C., where he was inspired by go-go groups like Trouble Funk. Once he got his first drum kit (purchased with insurance money from a summer camp fire that burned all of his clothing), Crumar patterned himself after his favorite go-go drummers and began incorporating other sounds and styles into his music. After he moved to San Francisco, Crumar began recording four-track demos of himself playing bass, guitar, and keyboards; eventually these demos made their way to Asphodel Records, which released his debut EP, As It Goes -- featuring scratching by Rob Swift -- in spring 2000. Phil Crumar Thinks It's Cool was issued later that fall.
