Formed in 1980 by Samba Mapangala, Virunga is known for their light, spacey-sounding guitars and solid beat. They were one of the first internationally successful African bands, releasing an album in the U.K. in 1984. They toured Europe in 1991. Virunga features a lineup of musicians from Zaire, Kenya, and Tanzania, which make their style something of a fusion, with forays into the Franco school of rumba and Parisian soukous on individual albums.
