Hip Tanzanians listen carefully to each new song performed by Maquis to learn what the next dance craze will be. This popular band formed in Dar Es Salaam in the early 1970s and has since been on the musical cutting edge. Noted for their tight yet lazy harmonies, what really sets Maquis apart is their ability to generate infectious new dance styles (mtindos). One of their first was Kamanyola bila jasho, or "dance Kamanyola without sweating"; a more recent one, zembwela, was such a hit that it virtually became synonymous with dancing. In 1990, Maquis won the nation's 1990 band competition.
