From Oxford, Oxfordshire, England, the original line-up of the Nubiles featured Danny Goffey and Gaz Coombes, later to find fame in Supergrass. The more recognisable line-up of this critically adored but commercially ignored band featured founding member Tara Milton (vocals/bass, ex-Five Thirty), Penny Schueller (guitar/keyboards), Georgio Curcetti (guitar), Chris Nettleton (keyboards/vocals) and Dan Goddard (drums/vocals). They moved to London in 1995 to further their career, and earned early press both for Milton’s Five Thirty connections and their unusual song arrangements, prompting comparisons to the Fall, the Pixies, Fugazi and Jimi Hendrix. Their debut single, ‘Layabout’, a compressed amalgamation of these influences released on Lime Street Records in February 1995, found critical favour and a Top 10 UK indie chart placing. Further releases were not so successful, however, and by the time the long-playing Mindblender limped out in 1998 interest in the band had largely evaporated. Dan Goddard went on to play with the Four Storeys.
