Artist Biography by

Based in Milan, Italy, No More Dolls is an alternative pop/rock band whose work has been edgy, gritty, and aggressive yet melodic and tuneful. Members of the group have cited Alanis Morissette, Skunk Anansie, and Radiohead as influences, and reviewers have compared their material to No Doubt/Gwen Stefani, the Cardigans, Eve's Plum and Letters to Cleo -- in other words, artists who know how to rock but have a strong sense of melody and pop craftsmanship. The name No More Dolls was inspired by lead singer Cecilia Miradoli's musical experiences outside of rock. Before the formation of No More Dolls, Miradoli sang jazz and concentrated on Billie Holiday's repertoire -- and when she was performing in Milan's jazz venues, she felt she was treated like a "doll." As much as Miradoli appreciated jazz, she decided that it wasn't right for her; Miradoli, in the words of No More Dolls guitarist Max Tarenzi, "was singing Billie Holiday at shows and playing AC/DC at home." So when No More Dolls got started, Miradoli made alternative pop/rock her primary focus and rebelled against sounding like a "doll" -- she wanted to move in a tougher, edgier, more aggressive direction -- and No More Dolls gave her that opportunity. No More Dolls also gave her a chance to continue performing in English; although Miradoli and Tarenzi come from a country in which Italian is the primary language, both of them are fluent in English and have agreed that No More Dolls should be an English-language band. Some Italian rockers have recorded in Italian; No More Dolls, however, has opted to write in English exclusively.

The band was formed in 2001, when Miradoli joined forces with Tarenzi (electric guitar, acoustic guitar), Ferdinando Mazzuca (electric bass), and Nicolò Taccori (drums). Their first EP, A Cat in the Mouth of a Mouse, came out in 2003; the track "Another Girl" was released as a single and became a hit in Italy and other parts of Western Europe. In 2004, the band released a second EP, which was titled Green [EP]. 2004 also found No More Dolls touring the United States, and working on their first full-length album.
