Born Rosa Lee Carson, guitar and banjo player Kate Moonshine is known mostly for the fine accompaniment she displayed at the side of her father, Fiddlin' John Carson. The father/daughter team had a half-music/half-comedy act in the late '20s that utilized Kate as a spunky, devil-tongued mountain woman who frequently put the oafish character played by Carson in his place. Moonshine also had a recording career of her own, however, singing bluesy story songs such as "Little Mary Phagan," which re-told the story of an innocent 13-year old factory girl being murdered at the hands of her boss.
