Mimi & Boyd started after a 1998 Detroit rave that ended with police interaction. Two of the escapees included Michelle Herrmann and Mark Gage (aka Vapourspace,) and they later spent time together at their hotel bonding about their profession and discussing a collaboration. A few weeks later, the two headed out to New York and began to work on a new project. After two weeks of work, the basic album was recorded and the two went their separate ways. But the next three years were spent tinkering with the mastering, and finally the album came out on Phthalo Records.
